The most common questions our customers ask — answered by our growers.
What pH should I run in coco coir?▾
5.8–6.2 is the sweet spot for coco. Unlike soil (6.0–6.8), coco is closer to hydro. Check your pH after mixing nutrients, not before. If you're running Athena or similar salt-based lines, pH tends to land in range naturally. Always use a calibrated pH pen — cheap test strips aren't accurate enough for coco.
I'm a complete beginner — where do I start with indoor growing?▾
Start simple: a 2x4 or 4x4 tent, a good LED light (200-400 watts actual), quality soil, and a basic 3-part or 2-part nutrient system. You'll also need a fan for airflow, a pH pen, and a timer. Budget $500-800 for a solid starter setup. We have a free Beginner Grow Class video on our YouTube channel. Come into the store and we'll build you a custom list.
My lower leaves are turning yellow between the veins. What's wrong?▾
Yellow between the veins while veins stay green = magnesium deficiency (interveinal chlorosis). Super common in coco or RO water. Fix: add Cal-Mag at 3-5 ml/gallon. If it's on NEW growth at the top, that's likely iron deficiency — same fix, but also check your pH (iron locks out above 6.5).
What LED light do I need for a 4x4 tent?▾
For a 4x4 you want 400-600 watts of quality LED. Target 30-50 actual watts per square foot. Key questions: 120V or 240V? Dimmer? Samsung LM301 diodes are the standard. We carry Gavita, HLG, ThinkGrow, and Spider Farmer — come in and we'll match the right light to your voltage and budget.
What's VPD and why does it matter?▾
VPD (Vapor Pressure Deficit) measures how hard your plants work to transpire. It combines temperature and humidity into one number. Target: 0.8-1.0 in veg, 1.0-1.4 in flower. Too low = slow growth + mold risk. Too high = stressed plants + nutrient burn. A $30 hygrometer and a VPD chart will change your grow.
How do I set up a Dosatron injector system?▾
A Dosatron D14MZ2 is the most popular. You need: the injector head, concentrate tanks (A and B for 2-part nutrients), check valves, and irrigation line. It sits inline on your water supply and draws concentrate at a set ratio (1:100 or 1:200). We have a full service video on YouTube, and our staff can build a complete parts list.
What's the best nutrient line for beginners?▾
Soil: Fox Farm Trio (Grow Big, Big Bloom, Tiger Bloom) — simple 3-part with feeding chart on every bottle. Hydro/coco: Athena Blended Line (Bloom A&B + Grow A&B) — 2-part with great pH stability. Budget: General Hydroponics Flora Series — proven results. All in stock with every supplement.
How do I control spider mites without harsh chemicals?▾
Best approach: predatory mites (Persimilis for two-spotted, Californicus for prevention). Release early and often. For knockdown: Lost Coast Plant Therapy, Athena IPM, or neem oil (veg only). Our IPM workshop covers biological pest control in detail.
Do I need Cal-Mag?▾
Almost always if running: coco coir, RO water, or LED lights. Dose: 3-5 ml/gal on top of base nutrients. In soil with tap water, probably not needed. We carry Athena CaMg, GH CALiMAGic, and Botanicare Cal-Mag Plus.
What size dehumidifier do I need?▾
Each plant transpires ~1 pint/day in flower. 20-plant room = 20 pints/day dehumidification. Quest 506 handles rooms up to 2,500 sq ft. For tents: 30-50 pint portable unit. We can calculate the exact model you need based on plant count, room volume, and HVAC.
How often should I water in coco?▾
Coco should never fully dry out. Seedlings: once daily. Veg: 2-4x daily. Flower: 4-6x daily with 10-20% runoff. This is "crop steering" — small frequent shots beat one big soak. Use a timer or irrigation controller.
What's the difference between HPS and LED?▾
LED: more efficient (2.5-3.0 umol/J vs 1.7 HPS), less heat, 50,000+ hour lifespan, dimmable, lower power cost. HPS: cheaper upfront, better penetration. For new setups, LED is the standard. Switching to LED also lets you downsize AC since they run cooler.
My lawn has brown patches in spring — what should I do?▾
In Ohio (zone 6): usually snow mold (rake and overseed), grub damage (milky spore or GrubEx), or dormant grass. Best program: aerate in April, overseed bare spots, apply starter fertilizer, then begin regular feeding once grass is actively growing.
How do I attract cardinals and songbirds?▾
Cardinals love black oil sunflower and safflower seeds (squirrels don't like safflower). Use a hopper or platform feeder near shrubs. Goldfinches: nyjer/thistle tube feeder. Woodpeckers: suet cakes. We have a full bird feeding section with feeders, seed, and squirrel baffles.
What's the best soil mix for raised beds?▾
Classic: 1/3 topsoil, 1/3 compost, 1/3 perlite. For a 4x8 bed (12" deep) = ~32 cu ft. Add worm castings (10%), perlite for drainage, slow-release organic fertilizer. No-mix option: Fox Farm's Raised Bed Planting Mix is ready to go.
How do I winterize my pond?▾
Ohio ponds need: a de-icer for gas exchange ($40-80), aerator running through winter, leaf netting in fall. Stop feeding fish below 50°F. Don't break ice — shock can kill fish. We carry Danner and Aquascape de-icers and aerators.
Should I use RO water or tap water?▾
Get a TDS reading. Under 200 PPM, tap is fine. Over 300-400, consider RO. Toledo tap runs 200-350 PPM by season. RO = clean slate but add Cal-Mag back. Bring a water sample to the store — we'll test it free.
How do I clone plants successfully?▾
4-6" cuttings with 2+ nodes. Cut at 45°, scrape stem, dip in Clonex gel. Use rockwool cubes or aeroponic cloner. Humidity 80-90%, 75-80°F, 18/6 light (low intensity). Roots in 7-14 days. Our Clone Workshop video covers every step.
What temp and humidity for my flower room?▾
75-80°F lights on, 65-70°F lights off. 45-55% RH in flower (lower late flower). Target VPD 1.0-1.4. A 5-10°F night drop encourages flower development. Monitor with TrolMaster or Pulse — consistency beats perfection.
Do you host classes at the store?▾
Yes! FREE workshops regularly — usually weekends. Topics: Indoor Growing, Mushrooms, Irrigation, Cloning, IPM, Soil Science, and more. All recorded and posted on our YouTube. Call (419) 725-2450 for the next class or subscribe at @ToledoIndoorGarden.
