What is VPD (and Why It's "The Key to Everything")

Understanding the science behind the single most important environmental parameter

The Science

Vapor Pressure Deficit (VPD) is the difference between the amount of moisture in the air and how much moisture the air can hold when saturated. It's measured in kilopascals (kPa) or millibars (mbar).

VPD = Saturation Vapor Pressure (at leaf temperature) - Actual Vapor Pressure (in the air)

In simple terms: VPD tells you how "thirsty" the air is. Low VPD = humid, wet air (less driving force for transpiration). High VPD = dry air (strong driving force for transpiration).

Why VPD Matters More Than Humidity Alone

Humidity alone doesn't tell the full story. A plant in 70% RH at 65°F behaves VERY differently than a plant in 70% RH at 85°F.

Temperature matters: Warm air can hold more moisture than cold air
Leaf temperature matters: The leaf surface is where transpiration happens
VPD combines both: It accounts for temperature AND humidity in one metric

How VPD Affects Your Plants

The VPD-Transpiration-Growth Connection

VPD controls transpiration. Transpiration pulls nutrients from roots to leaves via xylem. No transpiration = no nutrient flow = no growth.

THE Game-Changer: LED vs HPS Leaf Temperature

Why most VPD charts online are WRONG (or at least incomplete)

🔥 HPS Lighting

HPS bulbs emit significant infrared radiation (radiant heat). This heats the leaf surface directly.

Leaf Temp = Air Temp + 2 to 5°F

At 78°F air temp, your leaves might be 80-83°F. This LOWERS effective VPD (warmer leaf = higher saturation vapor pressure = smaller deficit).

💡 LED Lighting

LEDs produce minimal infrared radiation. Leaves cool through transpiration without radiant heating.

Leaf Temp = Air Temp - 2 to 5°F

At 78°F air temp, your leaves might be 73-76°F. This RAISES effective VPD (cooler leaf = lower saturation vapor pressure = larger deficit).

⚠️ THIS IS WHY GROWERS SWITCHING FROM HPS TO LED HAVE PROBLEMS

You keep the SAME temperature and humidity... but your VPD just changed by 0.3-0.5 kPa. Your plants are suddenly stressed, growth slows, leaves curl. It's not the light — it's your VPD management. You need to adjust your environment when you switch light types.

This chart assumes leaf temp is 3°F ABOVE air temp (typical for HPS)
DE HPS runs hotter — leaves may be +4 to +5°F

How to Adjust When Switching Light Types

🔥 HPS → 💡 LED

Problem: VPD will INCREASE (leaves cooler = bigger deficit)
Solution: INCREASE temperature by 3-5°F OR INCREASE humidity by 5-10% to compensate

Problem: VPD will DECREASE (leaves warmer = smaller deficit)

Why different stages need different VPD targets

🌱 Clones & Seedlings

0.4 - 0.8 kPa

Why LOW VPD: No established root system yet. High humidity (low VPD) reduces transpiration demand, prevents wilting, and maintains turgor pressure.

Target: 75-80% RH, 70-75°F

🌿 Vegetative

0.8 - 1.2 kPa

Why MODERATE VPD: Roots are established. Moderate transpiration drives nutrient uptake and encourages vigorous vegetative growth. Promotes leafy, bushy structure.

Target: 60-70% RH, 72-78°F

🌸 Transition / Flip

1.0 - 1.3 kPa

Why INCREASING VPD: Gradual increase signals the plant to shift from vegetative to generative growth. Controls stretch, encourages flowering site development.

Target: 55-65% RH, 75-80°F

🌺 Early Flower (Weeks 1-4)

1.0 - 1.4 kPa

Why HIGHER VPD: Drives resin production, encourages flower site formation. Higher transpiration = more nutrient delivery to developing flowers.

Target: 50-60% RH, 75-82°F

💎 Mid/Late Flower (Weeks 5-8)

1.2 - 1.6 kPa

Why HIGHEST VPD: Maximum generative steering. Lower humidity prevents mold in dense flowers. Higher VPD drives resin production and trichome development. Increases bud density.

🍇 Ripening / Flush (Final 1-2 Weeks)

1.3 - 1.6 kPa

Why MAINTAIN HIGH VPD: Prevent mold during final ripening. Some growers push even higher (1.5-1.7) to stress plants for increased resin as a defense mechanism.

Target: 40-45% RH, 70-75°F (cooler)

How to Control VPD

INCREASE humidity to LOWER VPD. Essential for seedling/veg stages. Ultrasonic or evaporative types.

Day vs Night VPD Strategies

☀️ DAYTIME (Lights On)

Target your stage-specific VPD (0.8-1.6 kPa)
Higher temps (75-82°F) to drive photosynthesis
This is when transpiration and growth happen
Monitor closely — lights add heat

🌙 NIGHTTIME (Lights Off)

Allow VPD to drop slightly (it's natural)
Lower temps (65-72°F) to save energy
Avoid going BELOW 0.4 kPa (mold risk)
Night "dry-back" is important (see crop steering)

Advanced: Using VPD to control plant behavior and maximize yields

What is Crop Steering?

Crop steering is the practice of using environmental conditions (VPD + irrigation) to steer plants toward vegetative growth (leafy, branchy) or generative growth (flowering, fruiting, resin production).

🌿 VEGETATIVE STEERING

Goal: Bushy, leafy growth

LOWER VPD (0.8-1.1 kPa)
Higher humidity (60-70%)
Frequent watering (wet substrate)
Smaller day/night temp differential

🌸 GENERATIVE STEERING

Goal: Flowering, density, resin

HIGHER VPD (1.2-1.6 kPa)
Lower humidity (45-55%)
Less frequent watering (dry-back)
Larger day/night temp differential

The VPD-Irrigation Connection

VPD and irrigation strategy work together:

LOW VPD + Frequent Watering = MAX VEGETATIVE

Plant stays wet and transpires slowly. Builds foliage and roots. Use early veg.

HIGH VPD + Dry-Back = MAX GENERATIVE

Plant transpires rapidly and substrate dries between waterings. Stresses plant into flowering/resin mode. Use mid-late flower.

Night Dry-Back and VPD

"Dry-back" is the amount of substrate moisture lost overnight. It's controlled by:

Night VPD: Higher VPD = more transpiration = more dry-back
Watering timing: Last watering should be timed to achieve target dry-back %
Target: 5-10% dry-back for veg, 10-20% for flower

Using VPD to Control Stretch

Plant stretch (internodal spacing) is controlled by VPD:

LOWER VPD = MORE STRETCH

High humidity, slow transpiration. Plants grow tall and lanky. Good for short plants you want to stretch.

HIGHER VPD = LESS STRETCH

Lower humidity, faster transpiration. Plants stay compact and bushy. Good for managing tall genetics.

Common VPD Mistakes

Learn from these pitfalls to avoid problems

Ignoring Leaf Temperature

Using air temp instead of leaf temp = wrong VPD calculation. Always account for your light type's effect on leaf surface temperature.

Using Wrong Chart for Light Type

LED and HPS have different leaf temps! Using an HPS chart with LED lights (or vice versa) can put you 0.3-0.5 kPa off target.

Not Adjusting for Night

VPD naturally drops at night (cooler, lights off). This is normal. Problem: letting it drop BELOW 0.4 kPa (mold risk) or not allowing proper dry-back.

Fighting Humidity Instead of Managing VPD

"My humidity is 60%!" — but is that GOOD or BAD? Depends on temperature! Stop chasing RH numbers, start targeting VPD.

Same VPD for All Stages

Seedlings need 0.6 kPa. Late flower needs 1.4 kPa. Using the same VPD throughout the grow is leaving performance on the table.

You MUST have a hygrometer (temp + RH meter) in your canopy. Preferably one that logs data. You can't manage what you don't measure.

Dead air pockets create microclimates. One corner could be perfect VPD, another corner could be mold city. Mix your air constantly.

Measure leaf temperature, not just air temperature. Get an infrared thermometer ($20) or thermal camera. Everything else flows from accurate leaf temp.
