Total Dissolved Solids (TDS): Look for "Total Dissolved Solids" or sum of all minerals. <150 PPM = good, 150-300 = okay, >300 = consider RO.
Alkalinity (as CaCO₃): Listed as "Total Alkalinity" or "Carbonate Hardness (KH)". <100 ppm = good, 100-200 = okay, >200 = pH will drift constantly.

Alkalinity & pH Buffering

Alkalinity is more important than starting pH. It's the invisible force that controls pH drift and determines how much acid you'll need.

🧪 Alkalinity ≠ pH (They're Different!)

pH: Measures acidity/alkalinity RIGHT NOW (scale 0-14)
Alkalinity: Measures buffering capacity – how hard water RESISTS pH change (measured as ppm CaCO₃ or KH)

Example: Your tap water is pH 8.0 with 200 ppm alkalinity. You add pH down and it drops to 5.8. Great! But 24 hours later, it's back to 7.5. Why? High alkalinity acts like a sponge, pulling pH back up. RO water has 0 alkalinity – pH adjusts easily and STAYS there.

🟢 Low Alkalinity (<100 ppm CaCO₃)

What it means: Water has minimal buffering. pH adjusts easily and stays stable.

📐 How to Calculate Acid Needs (Sulfuric or Phosphoric)

Step 1: Test your water's alkalinity (KH test kit)
Step 2: Determine target alkalinity for your nutrient line (typically 40-60 ppm for most liquid nutrients)
Step 3: Calculate acid needed:

Formula: mL of acid (35% sulfuric) = (Alkalinity PPM ÷ 50) × Gallons of water

Example: 100 gallons of 150 ppm alkalinity water
(150 ÷ 50) × 100 = 300 mL of 35% sulfuric acid to neutralize alkalinity

Safety: Always add acid to water (never water to acid). Use dilute forms (35% max). Wear gloves and eye protection. Sulfuric acid is dangerous – phosphoric acid (pH down) is safer for home use.

Water temp affects dissolved oxygen, root respiration, and pathogen growth. Cold roots = happy plants. Warm roots = root rot.

🧼 Reservoir Cleaning Protocol

Symptoms:

Clear or white slimy coating in reservoir, tubing, or roots (not brown). Slippery texture. No foul smell. Clogs emitters.

Solution:
